The redesign of the Grand Hyatt New York began in 2009 and was coordinated with various phases of construction, culminating in the December 2011 completion. This two year process spanned a rapid evolution of light sources and a construction process that maintained full operation of the 1300-room hotel.

The Lobby was previously renovated in 1996 and included a plethora of dark mirror on the central ceiling coffers. With virtually no daylight or windows, the space was an ill-defined volume from a different era. The goal of the redesign was to create a grand, unified central space with a transformable luminous environment to vary the guest experience throughout the day.

Newly painted surfaces created a "sky" for the volume, however the celling geometry presented considerable lighting challenges. The 18” deep coffers at the East and West ends of the space and 10 foot deep coffers in the center required different approaches to create a uniform appearance. The shallow coffers are uplit from the sides of the space at the mezzanine floor edge. New polished stainless steel enclosures are suspended from the ceiling to avoid costly modification or demolition of the mirror at the floor edge. Each enclosure holds linear LED luminaires with modified optics to produce a forward-throw with minimal lateral spread. The deep coffers are uplit from the center of the space with linear LED luminaires mounted on top of the existing structural beam and concealed with new metal cladding. Similar modified optics provide a strong forward-throw without spilling direct light on the coffer walls. The result is a uniform celling appearance throughout the center of the lobby.

The New York Central restaurant was an existing “greenhouse” space cantilevered over 42nd Street. With the bar at one end and the dining room at the other, the new venue spans over half of the hotel's street frontage. The sculpture chandelier is the conceptual thread of continuity through the space.
