INTRO
Revitalizing wasted architectural space for new potential purpose has always been a hot topic for discussion. Over the years, more architectural works have been focusing on injecting new and fresh elements to re-purpose wasted, or seasoned architectural space. As a young design agency, ON also has an interesting approach and has been interested in developing the use of wasted space and how its original character can play a part for its owners, or end users. For example, Xin Tian Di in Shanghai is probably one of the most well-known old meets new architecture that many current young designers take inspirations from. As a case study, ON has approached one of its recently completed projects in Taipei, Taiwan in a more unique method that draws the similar approach, yet with a different attitude and focus on how lighting plays an integral part to its overall mood, atmosphere and most importantly, the brand identity and DNA.
如何将浪费,废弃,老旧的建筑空间重新注入新的潜在目标,一直是人们讨论的热门话题。多年来,越来越多的建筑作品致力于将新的元素注入到废弃的或陈旧的建筑空间中,以达到一个互相冲击的设计感。作为一个年轻的设计机构,ON Design Lab对开发浪费空间的利用也是感兴趣的,以及如何为它的拥有者或最终用户发挥最大设计价值作用。例如上海新天地,可能是其中最著名的一个古老新旧建筑整合项目,受到了各种注视,许多目前的年轻设计师从中获得灵感。作为一个案例研究,ON Design Lab最近完成了一个位于台湾的设计项目,这个项目在对照明与空间设计的组成部分上有着不同的态度。整体来说,主要的设计考量来自于空间与品牌的总体情绪焦点,气氛,以及最重要的品牌识别和DNA。
BRAND CONCEPT
ANALOG and LITTLE LADIES are two shops that share a similar culture with their art works. ANALOG being a tattoo design studio while LITTLE LADIES being a very westernized hair salon barber shop. The common language that is shared between the two shops are the art of body inking and retail. Every person working here seems to have a unique graphic composition inked on certain parts of their bodies, and for the LITTLE LADIES, also the hairdo. When speaking with them, ON decided to use the common language, the art of tattoo, to approach the overall interior design and shop identity. As a result, the original underground wasted space needs to be reimagined with ample amount of lighting and the use of texture to enhance its existence. Based on this interpretation, ON’s first approach is to strip down the interior space and restore it back to its most original architectural state and investigate the raw beauty of the space.
ANALOG和LITTLE LADES是两个有着浓厚艺术情节的商店。它们有着相似却又不同于彼此的艺术坚持。ANALOG是一个纹身设计工作室,而LITTLE LADIES则是一个非常美国西岸化的个性发廊店。这两个商店的共同语言是身体刺青和零售的艺术。每一个在这里工作的人似乎都有一个独特的构图在自己身体的某些部分。 刺青艺术显然是这两间工作室共有的语言。基于这个原则,整体设计,就直接以研究刺青的本质来作为一个设计手法,并且利用原来地下空间的浪费,与需要重新给予充足的照明和纹理增强,让其存在使用,基于这种解释,第一种方法是剥离室内空间,使其恢复到最原始的建筑状态,并调查所谓的空间原始面貌。
When we refer to tattooing, it is essentially the idea of painting on the human body. With that said, the first thing ON decided to do is to restore the current wasted space back to its original state, and investigate what it looked like without any artificial patching works. As a result, the original state showed an incredible raw structure with a mix of concrete and brick works that ultimately played an important role in the final design decisions. ON calls, this method “design by demo”. With such a unique combination of two retail and client service driven industries, ON found a common architectural language that is pure and true the core of their business.
当我们提到纹身,它本质上是对于身体原始皮肤的破坏。以这个原则接下去发想,我们决定做的第一件事是使得到的空间恢复原来没有人使用过的状态,并调查它看起来像没有任何人工修补的工程。这个设计手法的名称叫做破坏性设计。此设计的手法在于调查最原始的空间样貌,并且使用最少的人工装修行为去衬托最原始的建筑美。在最后整合时,在这两个零售业和客户服务驱动行业的独特结合下,找到了一种纯粹的、真正的建筑语言。
Lighting, texture, and mood
By revealing the original earthworks and construction materials, the design relies heavily on the use of lighting as means to provide atmosphere and cohesive architectural lighting. ON believes the minimal use of downlighting is crucial to achieving atmosphere. As a result, the main feature piece in the space is only lit up with a thin led strip to enhance the floating in front of the wall to increase depth and textural contrast. ON wishes to embrace as much of the original structure as possible to express a new identity of old meets new.
通过揭示原土方和建筑材料,设计将会依赖于照明提供的氛围和凝聚力的焦点来增强建筑照明的使用。我们认为尽可能使用少的筒灯会是实现氛围至关重要的一环。其结果是,在空间中的主要特征部分只照亮了一个薄的LED带,以加强在前面的墙壁浮动,以增加深度和纹理对比度。在希望衬托尽可能多一些的原始结构,以表达另一种新旧融合的概念。
Another main thing is that the shop is located on the B1 level, in which the design of an eye-catching logo and imagery becomes important. Lighting and logo will act as a main catalyst to attract visitor’s attention and most importantly, stimulate curiosity. As a designer that considers how lighting plays an integral part in the architecture, ON designed an interesting façade shopfront that serves as a main visual impact to intentionally draw potential customers and visitors into their shop. The unfortunate things are that there was no way to allow day light into the underground space, other wise it would be even more amazing.
另一件重要的事情是,商店位于负一层,所以设计一个引人注目的标志和图像变得尤其重要。灯光和标志将成为吸引游客注意力的主要催化剂,最重要的是激发好奇心。作为一个考虑空间、建筑与照明如何整合的设计师,其店面设计手法将作为主要的一个视觉冲击,故意使用灯光与反射效果去吸引潜在的客户和参观者进入他们的商店。不幸的是,没有办法让白天的光线进入地下空间。
Once entering the space, the mood is cohesively designed to blend two different shops together. The Corridor creates a neutral blend between the bar and the barbershop, and then leads visitors into the main tattoo studio. The colors of the lighting cannot be too different, otherwise it would create a very odd separation between spaces. The goal is to create a harmonious relationship between two shops without an obvious separation. The main lighting used in the barber shop are track lights and halogen lamps on the mirrors to mimic a very westernized culture barbershop. The track lighting is mainly used to focus on the rows of the customers, while the halogen lamps serve as the focal lighting area for each customer’s face and body. The space appears to be very foreign and individual that enhances identity of the barbershop.
一旦进入地下空间,将会发现两种不同空间的灯光性质。走廊酒吧和理发店之间的中性混合,然后带领游客进入后区域的主要纹身工作室。灯光的颜色不能完全一样,否则会造成空间之间不明显的奇怪分隔。我们的目标是在设有明显分隔的情况下,在两个商店之间建立和谐的空间关系。在理发店的主要照明用轨道灯和卤素灯的反射镜来模拟一个非常西方文化的理发店。轨道照明主要用于关注顾客的行为,而卤素灯作为每个顾客面部和身体的焦点照明区域。空间显得很外交,又能提高个人在理发店的身份。反之,在尽头的纹身工作室相对来说灯光分布较为扩散与整体。刺青师要求的是单一聚光灯的方向,而非整体空间打亮光。从入口到尽头则有一条新制作的白色铁板,陈列不同个性商品,配合天花可调节试的轨道灯来达到商品打光与陈列作用。最重要的是,这个铁板身后打了一条线性LED光,与原始建筑墙面脱开,贯穿了整个建筑空间进而达到不同空间但是又有一个统一的链接元素。
At the entrance, there is an important area where lighting plays a big factor in separating the spaces. This project being different from traditional retails spaces requires a different lighting consideration. At the entrance foyer, customers experience a more typical retail set up where hats, shirts, hoodies, and books are displayed as pieces of merchandise for sale. However, as they walk down the corridor bar, they experience a food and beverage feel, yet with products on the back wall for sale. This plays a very interesting interaction between customers and products where they are not forced to buy the product, but rather indulge in the environment. Again, the lighting layout is very simple and straight forward with low and controlled temperature and a warm white color to present a more mellow and cohesive atmosphere throughout. Accent lightings are only used when necessary to perform specific functions.
特别是在入口专门买卖服装的地方也是需要考量一下灯光设计的比例。由于此案有别于一般传统商业空间,它所需的灯光设计又有些不一样。在入口的地方是陈列衣服,帽子,书籍与一些手工艺术品的地方。但是却又不是一个标准商业空间的陈列方式。 实际上,在店里面所有看到的物品都是可以买卖的,甚至是刺青用品。 即使是这样,灯光的布局原则还是始终如一, 不采用过多的筒灯或是装饰灯具,而是延续轨道灯或是几个个性化的吊灯,弹性来直接照亮商品与空间。灯光的亮度也尽量控制在较为低色温,因为隔壁就是理发店,所以需要一个比较明显的灯光温度区别。在进入这个其它空间之后, 中间过度的空间就是一个长条形的吧台。后面专门有一些特制饮品,咖啡以及手工甜点。 虽然形式上是个吧台,但是后面又同时是个工作区。虽然看似杂乱的功能,却又奇异地和谐。这里使用的灯光形式也尽量不需要太复杂。整个3米多长度的巨型吧台只有3个主要的轨道灯打在后面的展示柜上。工作台上也是几个简单的造型灯具点亮局部必要的区域。总之,尽量不使用过多的灯光只是为了把空间打亮。
CONCLUSION
The overall concept is meant to express a story telling design that captures two distinct atmospheres, while sharing a similar passion for arts and design. As an experimental design approach, time will reveal whether this model of a new retail behavior or habitation can succeed or not. As a designer, ON is blessed to witness the process and be a part of the lead in this project to implement new ideas as a testing ground for future business owners.
整个概念是用来表达一个故事设计,捕捉两种截然不同的气氛,同时分享艺术和设计的热情。作为一种实验设计方法,时间将揭示这种新的零售行为或居住模式能否成功。作为一名设计师,有幸见证了这一过程,并成为这个项目中的一部分,负责将新思想作为未来企业所有者的测试基础。
The more we understand how lighting relates to design, the better we become as professional designers and architects. Many would argue how can we use lighting as design tool if we are not professional lighting designers, but we are confident to say we know how to approach our design in a way that lighting is considered equally important as showcasing the architecture and space. After all, we believe in design first, second comes implementation. How can we design or be creative if we cannot bridge the difference between creative and technical?
我们越了解照明与设计的关系,我们就越能成为专业的设计师和建筑师。许多人会争论,如果我们不是专业的照明设计师,我们怎么能使用照明作为设计工具,但我们有信心说我们知道如何以照明和建筑空间同等重要的方式来对待我们的设计。毕竟,我们首先相信设计,其次是实现。如果我们不能弥合创意和技术之间的差异,我们如何设计或创造?
