Easy access is a hallmark of the Mirador at The Village apartment complex in Irvine, CA. The Village is a rental apartment complex composed of four distinct housing zones, each the size of a typical city block. Located at a site in Orange County accessible from three freeways, it is within walking distance of the Irvine Spectrum Center and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

Within the confines of the complex, however, you might not even realize you're in Southern California. The master plan for the low-rise residential structures simulate san Italian town with streets, walkways and public parks. Architectural styles are varied to differentiate the clusters of buildings. Throughout the development, custom decorative fixtures were inspired by traditional European and Middle East lanterns and post lights.

“We observed during our site visits to other Irvine Company developments that communal spaces and landscaped circulation areas between living units were typically lit with post lights,” says David McCarroll, partner, KGM Architectural Lighting, Santa Monica, CA. “They provide basic illumination, but our objective for the Mirador project was to provide a residential experience for the tenants, and people don't often light their backyard primarily with post lights.”

KGM proposed a program of small low-voltage fixtures that would complement the layered landscaping.“The effect would create the welcoming environment of fine homes and resorts.” He indicates. The developer's in-house design team studied the proposal documents, and agreed to give us the opportunity to proceed,” McCarroll says.

In-grade low-voltage MR16 uplights were installed in all arcades and breezeways as a visual unifying element that also defines the scale and juxtaposition of the individual buildings within each grouping. Linear fluorescent T5, 3,000K, 85 CRI uplights were mounted on the exterior above the reveal on selected floors to emphasize the color, texture and details of the exterior's prominent facades. They also highlight circulation towers and function as way finding elements.

Taking advantage of the outdoors virtually year-round is a way of life in Southern California. At the Mirador, pool areas serving residents of the individual apartment buildings have decks with moon lighting illumination created by low-voltage MR16 lamps beamed from palm trees. Low-voltage MR16 uplights created exterior “event rooms” and are integrated into the various structures.
